This will be compulsory for all 1st year Music Technology Students, unless you have already arranged a placement elsewhere. IF THIS IS THE CASE YOU MUST SPEAK TO ME URGENTLY SO I AM AWARE OF NUMBERS
Theme and outcome:
The composition, Crossing, will tackle the theme of ‘borders’ whether as the controversial, historical boundary changes of Uppermill, or as contemporary, shifting, international borders, or as social, psychological or musical borders. The students will use the ‘borders’ theme as inspiration to devise music for themselves to play alongside the duo, using the commission piece’s graphic score as a guide. The music will then be recorded to become a movement of Crossing as well as being sampled and used in other parts of the composition. Music Technology students will produce fixed media pieces for installation at the venue on the concert day as appropriate.Hopefully the students will feel real ownership of the commission and its theme. At the première concert we will celebrate the process of the project as well as the musical outcome e.g. with an audience discussion involving the student participants/ an interactive displayAll work will be collated into an interactive e-magazine (produced by Gavin Wayte and the Polaris Duo) for each of the students to have as a legacy, and for public access at the end of the project.
Indicative workshop content:
Part A:
Short preview recital by the Polaris DuoIntroduction to the instruments and technologyIntroduction to the project and project briefSharing of students’ pre-project materialHow to develop ideas and create music themed on borders?Introduction to the graphic scoreDevelopment of initial musical ideasSummary and how to develop ideas further
Part B:
Recap and update Further development of musical ideas including by using the graphic scoreInitial rehearsal for the recording
Part C:
Recap and updateFinal developments Rehearsal and recording
With the Music Tech students we will adapt the plan above as appropriate.Main aims for us are for the students to engage with the theme, do something new creatively, and have produced some sound/music by the end of the process.
There will be online project materials for students to interact with and use to prepare (if they are of a mind to) for the first Visit, including information on the instruments, graphic scores, the project theme and so on. These will go up in advance of the first visit. We understand that not all students will have time to prepare and that's totally fine.
The concert will be on SUNDAY 7th JULY at 15.00. UPPERMILL METHODIST CHURCH. STUDENT ENTRY FREE AND FREE ENTRY FOR ASFC SUPPORTING STAFF.
