DAW Connections Diagram

Being able to understand and connect a wide range of equipment is an essential part of a sound engineers job. The ability to identify connection types, understand signal flow, troubleshoot connections and faulty equipment, and resolve communication issues between equipment is vital whether you are setting up a basic home studio, or working in a commercial facility.

Task 1

First of all I would like you to draw a connections diagram for the DAW you use in college.

This must include the following equipment:

iMac
Lexicon Audio Interface
Shure SM58
Alesis MIDI Keyboard
Headphones.

To begin with make a list of the available connectors/connection types on each piece of equipment

Then you will create a simple line diagram showing how each item connects, the type of cable required, and the signal flow through that cable

From this you will create an inventory list of the cables required, clearly indicating cable type, connector type, and what it is used for.

Task 2

Once you have successfully completed Task 1, I would like you to repeat the exercise for the dream DAW equipment list you have recently created.

This must include a connections diagram, showing cable/connector type and signal flow, and comprehensive equipment list including all required cabling and equipment needed to make the system work.
