Royalties & Licensing Task

Please use the Universe Of Music poster showing how and where people make money in the music industry to try and answer the following questions

Act 1 - John McCartney – Songwriter and Band member who writes and performs his own material

Act 2 - Britney Aguilera – Pop star who has a record deal but performs other peoples material

Act 3 - Quincy James – Songwriter who’s material is performed by other pop stars/artists

Act 4 - Lukes Song – 98 Problems

Written by Luke Warren who has a publishing deal with Megapublishing. Publishing rights are assigned to Megapublishing for 5 years, 50/50 split of income agreed.

1 Version released by Jay X through Rapping Records who own the recording rights for Jay x’s version.

2nd version released by Tupac Smalls and Biggie Shakur and released through Columbia Records who own the recording rights for Tupac and Biggies Version.

Jay X’s version is also sampled for the latest X Factor winners single, who used a sample of the chorus from Jay X’s version released by Rapping Records.

The Tupac/Biggie version of the song also appears in the soundtrack to the movie Star Wars Episode 8 – A Menacing New Beginning Strikes Back To The Jedi

An orchestral version of the song also appears in the film score.

In each case please use the poster to establish all sources of income. You will need to also use your knowledge of record deals, publishing deals, and think about who owns the rights to each song
