On Music Creators
Before recording technology as we know it, music was notated by a composer. This is an early form of recording buts its limitations were that every performance was an interpretation. The composer and conductor were the stars.
This was very exclusive, limited to people with wealth and an education, you would need a good grasp of maths and english, to play an instrument, free time, and money, all of which were the preserve of the upper class.
Once early recorders appeared we could make exact (facsimile) reproductions of things. This opened up the world of recording - people travelled everywhere documenting anything and everything.
As technology improved, it also got cheaper, and this enabled the democratisation of recording. Accessible to more people, but potentially also reducing the quality of released material.
The internet made this more obvious. The gatekeepers are no longer major record labels, but aggregator sites and the general public. Again you could argue this has resulted in a drop in quality.
Notation into Early recording was a big jump
Multitrack tape into Digital was another big jump (big cost and space savings)
Digital to In The Box (computing) was another huge jump meaning anyone could create music
On Music Consumers
Pre recording music availability was limited to sheet music or performances
The explosion of Pop Music in the 1960s massively increased consumption of music.
Big increases in 7" sales, but also all related things like fashion, radio, record players, fashion, nightclubs etc etc. The first proper teenage revolution, that gave us lots more genres and musical experimentation
Consumer formats after this were a commercial attempt at making money - 12", cassette, CD etc. Even though some were recordable it still wasn't easy to pirate music, you had to invest time still
Internet - This was a huge change in the value of music, availability and piracy.
Blockchain technology is being touted as the next big thing that will allow creators to get paid for their music
