Music Production Techniques (Yr 1 Cert) - Task 1 - ASFC Studio Equipment Specification

Please work on your task 1 below. You will also need to make a plan with the group you are going to record over the coming weeks, so you have plenty to be getting on with.


Task 1: please put together information about the following equipment

Microphones:

Here's a link to a list of Microphones we have at Ashton College.
Please choose 3 microphones to write about. You will need to conduct your own research. You must include information about the following:
  • Name of microphone & image(s)
  • Type (dynamic, condenser, ribbon)
  • Polar Pattern (cardiod, omni-directional, figure of 8) for more info and images visit this web-page 
  • Frequency response (include picture - you should be able to find them online - just search the name of the microphone along with 'frequency response'
  • Typical uses - what type of instruments can they be used on?  

Mixing Desk / Recording Device:

We are about to start using a new Mixing Desk with a built in Audio Interface.
The interface is a Presonus 24:4:2

You need to write about at least 3 of the features below and include images.
  • Mic/Line inputs and Gain control (and phantom power)
  • Aux Sends
  • Solo & Mute buttons
  • Talkback button/function
  • Sub-Group channels
  • Fat Channel (a way of processing audio on any channel - includes gates, compressors, limiters and equalization)

Speakers / Monitors:
  • You should start this section by explaining the difference between active and passive monitors. Here's a basic guide to the difference between active and passive - please write in your own words. 
  • In the main studio we use a pair of active monitors - Mackie HR824. Include any information about these speakers, you may also find it useful to read this review
  • Areas that you can include information about: input connections, construction, technical information. 

Below are the criteria required for Pass, Merit & Distinction:
  • P1, Explain the technical terminology associated with manufacturers specifications for at least 3 items of equipment for each of the headings above.
  • M1, Complete the requirement for P1 and elaborate your explanations with reference to appropriate examples
  • D1, Complete the requirement for P1 and M1, and discuss the importance of each aspect of terminology in relation to the recording process, demonstrating how the specification influences its use in the real world.
